The NICU

The Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome Foundation has a special packet of education and emotional support for parents who give birth to babies after a pregnancy with twin to twin transfusion syndrome who need the extra special care of a neonatal intensive care unit. If you go on to experience the NICU with your babies, please call The Foundation and we will mail you a complete packet over night express. We can also connect you with other mothers who have experienced their babies in the NICU after a pregnancy with twin to twin transfusion syndrome.

In this section, Stephanie Lerner-Ernsteen, NICU Coordinator for the Foundation, writes about the premature birth of her twin boys after a sudden twin to twin transfusion syndrome which led to the their immediate birth. She has also gathered links for you for immediate online NICU support as well as books and special items that you can order. Stephanie also leads the parent NICU group at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, IL.

We place so much trust in the angels involved in the NICU units. They are truly fighting for our babies in every possible way. Remember, though, that you are the parents to your children. You have the right to be extremely involved in their care and have the final say in their treatments. You are the ones needed the most by your babies. They know how much you love them. They love you with all their heart too.

We also encourage you to have your babies in the same isolate. This has been very important and helpful for babies who are twins to stay together as they have been for such a long time. They actually do better this way according to studies we have read. Twins should always be together. This is something you can advocate for.
