List of TTTS Treatment Centers Importance of Horizontal Rest and Nutrition Frequently Asked Questions

This is a list of the laser centers that The TTTS Foundation knows of in the world that treat TTTS with laser ablation on the placenta. This is a contently changing list. Some of the doctors, locations, and phone numbers may have changed without our knowledge.

**Do not assume that because a laser center is listed on The TTTS Foundation's website, that The TTTS Foundation endorses the center. This list is for information only. For more information contact The TTTS Foundation at 800-815-9211**

Dr. Julian E. De Lia created the procedure. Centers are listed by state and country. The TTTS Foundation provides this listing as a service to the families. There are different degrees of experience amongst these centers. We always encourage families to contact at least 3 centers and ask questions regarding their experience with surgery on both anterior and posterior placentas as well as triplets before choosing a center.

**If a center tells you that they cannot perform the surgery, call The TTTS Foundation at 800-815-9211 for help in getting a second opinion at another center. Never accept that your babies cannot be helped.**

**Do not assume that just any center is OK for your situation or that you should go to the center most local to you. What is important is that you go to the best center that will best help your babies.**

Laser Surgery for TTTS
The first intrauterine laser surgery on the placenta to treat TTTS was pioneered and first performed in 1988 by Dr. Julian E. De Lia, Medical Director of the International Institute for the Treatment of Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome in the United States. Since then, other doctors have begun offering this type of surgery. Below is a list of recommended questions to ask the laser doctor, and a list of these doctors by state and by country.

Dr. Julian E. De Lia

The doctor closest to you may or may not be the best choice for your situation. There are varying degrees of expertise and experience. It is important for you, as a patient, to learn as much as you can about TTTS and ask the doctor(s) you have selected the following questions:

1. How many laser surgeries have you performed?

2. What are your statistics in saving both babies? Ask this specifically for your placental type also (posterior or anterior)

3. Do you cauterize all the connecting vessels between the babies disconnecting them completely?

4. What type of anesthesia do you use?

5. If triplets, ask how many triplet pregnancies have you performed laser surgery on?

6. Do you perform a septostomy during surgery? Do I have the choice to reject it?

7. If you recommend a cord ligation, do I have the choice to reject it?

8. If an anterior placenta, do you make an incision using a straight scope or use a bendable scope endoscopically and why?

9. What is your criteria for laser surgery and why?

10. Do you recommend amnioreductions before laser, why or why not?

11. Who trained you.
